What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic system that uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually move teeth into position — no metal brackets, no wires, no monthly tightening appointments. Each set is custom-fabricated from smooth plastic and worn for roughly one to two weeks before advancing to the next. At DiNinno Family Dental in Fitchburg, MA, Dr. DiNinno III is an Invisalign Preferred Provider, a designation Invisalign awards based on case volume and experience.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Treatment begins with a consultation and a 3D digital scan. That scan is used to build a treatment plan mapping each tooth’s movement from its current position to the planned final position, and it produces a virtual preview of the projected result. It is worth understanding what that preview is: a plan, not a guarantee. Actual outcomes depend heavily on how consistently the aligners are worn.

Aligners are worn 20–22 hours per day and removed only to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush and floss. Check-in visits typically occur every 6–8 weeks. Many cases complete in 12–18 months; minor corrections can finish in as little as 6 months, and complex cases can run longer. The practice’s clear aligner treatment page covers how cases are handled at the Fitchburg office.

Two Things Patients Are Often Surprised By

Attachments

Most cases require small tooth-colored composite bumps bonded to some teeth. These give the aligners something to grip so they can produce rotations and other movements plastic alone cannot achieve. They are removed at the end of treatment, but while they are on, they make the aligners somewhat more visible than marketing images suggest.

Retainers Are Permanent

Teeth drift back toward their original positions after any orthodontic treatment. Retainers are not an optional add-on at the end — they are how the result is kept, indefinitely. Ask what the retainer plan is and what replacements cost before you start, because that is a long-term cost that rarely appears in the headline treatment fee.

Invisalign Compared With Traditional Braces

  • Appearance — Aligners are clear and far less noticeable than metal brackets, though attachments do reduce that somewhat.
  • Diet — Aligners come out to eat, so there are no food restrictions. Braces have several.
  • Hygiene — Brushing and flossing are normal with aligners. Braces make both harder, which raises decay and gum-disease risk during treatment.
  • Comfort — Smooth plastic edges are gentler on cheeks and gums than brackets and wires.
  • Discipline — This is the real tradeoff. Braces work whether or not you cooperate. Aligners only work if you wear them, and treatment stalls if you do not.
  • Case complexity — Braces still handle certain severe bite and rotation problems more predictably.

What Can Invisalign Treat?

  • Crowded teeth — when there is not enough room for teeth to align properly
  • Gaps between teeth — spaces from missing teeth or natural jaw growth
  • Overbite — upper front teeth biting well over the lower teeth
  • Underbite — lower teeth sitting in front of upper teeth
  • Crossbite — upper and lower jaws misaligned side to side
  • Open bite — upper and lower teeth that do not meet when biting

Severe skeletal discrepancies, significant underbites, and some complex rotations may be better handled with fixed braces, a combination approach, or referral to an orthodontist. A consultation should tell you honestly which category your case falls into.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost in Fitchburg, MA?

Cost depends on case complexity and treatment length. Minor corrections sit at the lower end; comprehensive full-arch treatment is broadly comparable to traditional braces. Many dental plans include a lifetime orthodontic benefit that applies to clear aligner treatment the same way it applies to braces — note that it is typically a lifetime maximum rather than an annual one, so it does not reset. Ask the office to submit a pre-treatment estimate to your insurer, and ask for a written estimate covering retainers and any mid-course refinement. The practice’s insurance page and financial policy explain how estimates and benefits are handled.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign

Does Invisalign hurt?

Most people describe pressure and mild soreness for a day or two after switching to a new set. That is expected and indicates the aligners are moving teeth. Persistent sharp pain is not typical and is worth reporting to the office.

How long does Invisalign take?

Minor corrections can take as few as 6 months. More involved cases commonly run 18–24 months. The estimate given at consultation assumes full-time wear; falling short of 20–22 hours a day extends it.

Can I eat whatever I want with Invisalign?

There are no dietary restrictions, because the aligners come out to eat. The practical catch is that they need to go back in promptly and teeth should be brushed first — eating with aligners in, or leaving them out through long grazing sessions, is the most common reason treatment falls behind schedule.

Will Invisalign affect my speech?

Some people notice a slight lisp for the first few days with a new set. It usually resolves within a day or two as the tongue adapts.

Can I get Invisalign if I already have crowns or veneers?

Often yes, but it needs planning. Attachments do not bond to porcelain as reliably as they do to natural enamel, which can affect which movements are achievable. If you are considering both orthodontics and veneers, the usual sequence is to straighten first and restore afterward. How complex dental cases are planned explains where orthodontics fits in a larger treatment plan.
